What should I study for Prompt Engineering?
Computer science, artificial intelligence, and, yes, language (like English) all help with Prompt Engineering.
Perhaps to most people’s surprise, knowing how language works and how to be hyper specific with your meaning is important for understanding how to prompt engineer optimally. This may actually be more important than knowing computer science and artificial intelligence.
It makes sense in a way because one of the L’s in LLM is “Language.”
What are some good Prompt Engineering Courses?
There are a lot of basically useless prompt engineering courses & offers out there.

- Here’s a free course that is decent (but not as good as the paid course):
Is there a certification for prompt engineering?
Not that we’re aware of, nor would such a thing be that valuable in our estimation.
Prompt engineering is such a new discipline that I suspect real world practice of practical application is far more valuable than a certificate.
How do I become a professional prompt engineer?
Our suggestion is a simple path of doing 3 things all at once until you get your dream prompt engineering job:
- MOST IMPORTANT: Regular practice talking to LLM’s
- Study prompt engineering relevant theory (see course above, study your first language, study AI & computer science)
- Look for jobs posted and approach companies that you think would benefit greatly from a prompt engineer and offer to help them.

How much do prompt engineers make in the US?
There is not good data on how much Prompt Engineers make. However, we can make some reasonable conclusions based upon the limited data we do have.
It is likely that there will a large variation in salaries for prompt engineering jobs. We’ve heard of $300k+/yr jobs, but have reason to believe there are many others at a much lower rate. This variation makes sense as there is no general market rate yet because the role didn’t exist just a few short years ago.
