What is Prompt Engineering?
Prompt Engineering refers to working to test & build incoming messages (“prompts” or “proompts” if you’re silly) to produce a desired output from an AI model.
There are different types of AI models that require different approaches to prompt engineering.
For example, Midjourney & ChatGPT prompts will/should be completely different.
Prompt engineering is a new discipline that didn’t exist just a few short years ago, but it has become incredibly important to getting increasing value from the AI models and chat bots build with artificial intelligence we interact with.
What do Prompt Engineers do?
Prompt Engineers play with prompts for AI models with the purpose of discovering what types of inputs provide the best outputs.
Jobs for prompt engineers have already popped up. These are often good, high paying jobs at desirable companies!
Prompt Engineers are not just useful for figuring out how to use customer facing tools like Midjourney & ChatGPT (by OpenAI). Software development companies that plan on plugging their software into AI model API’s will get great use out of prompt engineers.
Why is Prompt Engineering important?
Garbage In ==> Garbage Out VS Gold In ==> Gold Out
Basically, the usefulness and value of an AI model’s output is relevant to the details of the input.
Knowing your language on a deeper level to give you more levers to test and, therefore, give you more avenues to test your prompts for desirable outputs.

There aren’t really any tools (that we are aware of) intentionally made for Prompt Engineering…
…so, we set out to make one.

How much do Prompt Engineers make?
There was recently a job posting for a $300k/yr position…
I don’t expect $300k/yr to be the norm and even if it turns out to be the norm, it will take companies a while to figure out (A) whether they want to hire a Prompt Engineer, (B) what they want that Prompt Engineer to do, and (C) how much value the PE will bring to the company and therefore how much compensation they can give.
I wouldn’t bank on Prompt Engineering suddenly having a huge pool of jobs.
More likely, PE will become a common skill that is needed to function in our AI world, like email or cell phones.
What is Prompt Engineering with GPT-4?
GPT-4 is really amazing.
It does change some prompt engineering templates because it is capable of doing different things and it has different strengths and weakness vs GPT-3/3.5.
